Republic of Karelia
The Republic of Karelia is situated in the northwest of Russia; it is a part of the Northwest Federal District of the Russian Federation. The area of Karelia is 180,500 km² (1.06% of the total territory of Russia). The population of the Republic of Karelia is 687,500, with an urban population of 76.4%. Karelia is the country of rocks, boulders and tens of thousands of lakes. More than 49% of the area of the republic is covered with forest and quarter the republic's territory is watery surface. The economy of the Republic of Karelia is founded on the processing of local kinds of natural resources (timber and minerals), the use of its tourist and recreational potential and its favourable economic and geographical frontier location. These factors define the specialised and regional features of the republic's economy.
